Which should I get ...
I have the option of getting a used mint condition 20D for $450., or a brand new D40 for $450. (Both body only) ACTUALLY ... Both come with the kit lens. oopsie! |

Get the D40...not because it's the new one, but because it is a great camera.
My family owns a D40 camera, and our latest expedition took us to seaworld, where pictures of dolphins in the air were no problem, and the color quality was amazing. It's a really great camera. |

The Canon 20D is a great camera and if it comes with a Canon lens this is a pretty good deal. While it is an older model this would be considered a prosumer model.
The Nikon D40 is an entry level camera and a pretty good one. If you are very familiar with how to use an SLR I would go with the 20D however if this is your first SLR I would go with the D40 or a Canon Rebel series. The D40 has auto settings which you can use while you are learning how to operate your camera manually. |
